WikiWatershed™ will be an open-source, open-information collaborative project, allowing users to share geographically-tagged data, photos, videos, comments, educational curricula, simulation models and other tools on streams and rivers. As "Wiki" implies, content will be primarily contributed, enhanced and maintained by the user community. The WikiWatershed™ web portal will link a database of watershed information to geo-tagged visual content viewable on Google Maps®/Earth®, Flickr®, Panoramio®, YouTube®, etc.

  • Locating the user, drawing watershed boundaries (upstream) & drainage network (to ocean) and retrieving basic geographic data for a watershed area
  • Defining local nested watershed systems

Model My Watershed

Model My Watershed screenshot
  • Defining
  • Simulating (hind-casting using a suite of models that use cartographic, hydrologic and climate data to quantify and model the flow of storm water runoff)
  • Manipulating (forecasting using the same simulation models, above, under various scenarios of future climate, land-use change and the implementation of best management practices)

Work in My Watershed

Define My Watershed screenshot

Meet professionals who work in watershed related careers. See them discuss how they got interested in the work that they do; what their jobs are like; what preparation they needed to do their work; and, interesting stories about their experiences.

  • Michele A., Civil Engineer and Hydrologic Modeler
  • Laura B., Research technician
  • Christina M., Watershed Educator
  • Sherman R., Research Technician
  • Yin-Phan T., Post Doctoral Candidate, Hydrologic Modeling

Monitor My Watershed

  • Collecting data, photos, videos, etc. (posted via Share My Watershed, below)
  • Learning how to conduct freshwater monitoring using the Leaf Pack Experiment Kit (developed by SWRC) and other techniques.
  • Identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates using a Water-Quality Cyber-tool
Pending Development

Share My Watershed

  • Posting geo-tagged monitoring data, photos, etc. (using applications as YouTube® and Flickr®)
  • Social-networking via forums, blogs, comments on photos, videos, data, etc.
  • Sharing curricula, activities and techniques among nature centers, teachers and watershed groups.
Pending Development

Manage My Watershed

  • Learning about legal and political frameworks for protecting critical habitat, preserving open space and freshwater resources
  • Using intuitive land-use analysis tools (GIS-based) to assess suitability for development or need for protection (critical habitat, steep slopes, historic resources, etc.)
  • Posting information about how to get involved in policy and advocacy efforts
  • Sharing ordinances, case studies, etc. among watershed groups to help with conservation efforts (a thread or component of Share My Watershed, above)

Discover My Watershed

  • Defining
  • Browsing, through a geographic interface, of watershed resources such as points of interest (parks, historic sites, etc.) and organizations active in specific areas
  • Highlighting sites and trails worth visiting (getting users outside)
  • Accessing, viewing and visualizing watershed geographic and water-quality data, and learning how to interpret them
